W. Curtis Preston interviews Ray Villeneuve, General Manager of the Whitewater Business Unit for Riverbed, at SNW 2012 in Santa Clara, CA. They talk about Whitewater, which is a cloud storage backup gateway product line that is used on premises and connects directly to the backup server. It does dedupe, compression, and encryption. It also keeps local copies of backup streams. Backup streams and archiving streams can be placed on the Whitewater application. It interfaces with Backup Exec, Net Backup, and Commvault, among others. Typically, the user will keep a local copy of their data and keep other copies in the cloud, where firms replicate it to multiple cloud storage sites. They also discuss Steelhead, which is a Riverbed product that accelerates application workloads around enterprises. Riverbed's cloud bucket (storage that lives in the cloud) interfaces with all of the popular cloud interfaces and object storage interfaces. It works with OpenStack, Atmos, Nirvanix, Rackspace, Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, and HP Cloud. Amazon's new Glacier service has been a huge success with Riverbed's customer base, and Riverbed is working actively with Amazon engineers. They also talk about Whitewater OS 2.0, which has an index that covers all data in the cloud.
