W. Curtis Preston interviews Steve Weber, Sr. Product Development Engineer for Imation, at SNW 2012 in Santa Clara, CA. They show off the RDX cartridge, which is ruggedized and static resistant, which makes it immune to damage from ESD shock and being dropped. Imation also has a secure RDX cartridge, which uses the same format, but has software encryption as well. After encryption, if somebody tries to place the secure RDX cartridge into a standard RDX drive, they will not be able to read it. They also discuss the A8 multi-cartridge library, which is network-attached and works with an iSCSI interface. It can operate in JBOD mode, or it can run as a VTL. The machine understands all of the iSCSI commands that backup applications are accustomed to using. Once a cartridge has been backed up, it can be ejected and stored or shipped as the user pleases. In addition, the application is able to handle more media as it is added to the pool.
