W. Curtis Preston interviews Peter Crosby, Product Manager for SanDisk, at VMWorld 2012 Barcelona. They discuss FlashSoft, SanDisk's server tier caching software. One would put SSD in a server and then install FlashSoft software in ESX. FlashSoft watches I/O traffic and puts the most commonly used data on cache on SSD, increasing performance by 3-5 times. No need to make changes to back-end storage. They discuss how this might lower the I/O on the back-end storage, potentially allowing for less expensive storage on the back-end.
