W. Curtis Preston interviews Eric Carter, Sr. Product Marketing Manager for Riverbed, at EMCWorld 2012. Riverbed focuses on improving performance by breaking bottlenecks that emerge in IT environments. It has the ability to reduce traffic that goes back and forth across the pipe with techniques such as dedupe. In addition, it uses TCP and UDP protocols to ensure that the data gets across with as few trips as possible. Riverbed assists with storing data in the public cloud by running workloads in the cloud. The Whitewater appliance backs up locally to disk, then dedupes and sends it to the cloud. They also discuss Granite, which Riverbed recently launched. It can connect to EMC's storage and bring data home from branch solutions to the data center, where it is sent back to branch offices. Granite makes storage work in the WAN.
